Caitlin's Building

By Caitlin, Year 9

My artwork is of a two-story building that has been overgrown with plantation, creating a mysterious and eye-catching outlook. The tiny little windows open and close. Each of them contains a different thing that represents my identity and got me where I am today. The cat sitting below the first window was strategically put there to help provide a mysterious vibe, and it was cute.

When I began creating my artwork I started by placing different shaped and sized pieces on my artwork. I was originally planning to do something 3D, but found what I was going for would be better portrayed on 2D. Whilst creating my artwork I originally wanted to use oil pastels but I found that oil pastels were not going to be easy to use or give the mysterious vibe that the watercolour paint did. After painting my artwork with watercolours which gave it a good texture, I roughly outlined specific parts of it. I did this to emphasise and brighten up my artwork.

My big idea for my art piece was to create something you can interact with, and that shows different parts of my identity. In my artwork I tried to show how these things mean a lot to me and shaped me as a person, creating who I am. The goals I had for my artwork were to achieve the following elements of art: line, texture, colour, form, shape and value. I believe I successfully achieved colour by using layers with watercolour paint to create a brighter and more colourful artwork, then I used the fineliner pen to outline my work, making it brighter and giving it more personality. I successfully achieved texture by making my artwork interactive and giving specific parts like the windows, bushes, etc. a texture whilst leaving the background plain, so I can continue to grow and change as a person.
